Get Ready For The Coming Wars Over Fish

Captain Jay Caputo, US Naval Institute: A Global Fish War is Coming

Hungry World

The demand for fish as a protein source is increasing. The global population today is 7.5 billion people, and is expected to be 9.7 billion by 2050, with the largest growth coming in Africa and Asia. Fish consumption has increased from an average of 9.9 kilograms per person in the 1960s to 19.7 kilograms in 2013 with estimates for 2014 and 2015 above 20 kilograms. The ten most productive species are fully fished and demand continues to rise in regions generally with little governance and many disputed boundaries.

In 2014, there were 4.6 million fishing vessels on the world’s oceans: 75 percent were in Asia and 15 percent in Africa. High seas fishing capacity has grown significantly, and there are now 64,000 fishing vessels with lengths in excess of 24 meters, and Asia’s distant water fishing nations continue to add newer and larger ships.

If you can get the fish or you can add value to those wno do, you will survive. If you can add value to those who get more fisn tnan you are capable of, you will prosper.

As a lesson to US leaders we are a "Potemkin Village";essentially a joke before the wprld's top powers. Can this be changed? Perhaps it can. Either the US will need to change leaders or the US leadership will need to change.

I'm not optimistic US leadership will change voluntarily. Donald Trump will destroy them and will replace them. Will this be better or worse when it happens? While I do not know, there seems little cause for optimism. Donald Trump's new America may be even worse tnan the current one. Either way ne cannot be stopped.

Should his policies fail the epitath of all sholuld be as follows, 1.) We were honorable, tried to stop him, and while we ultimately failed America's fate would have been better had we stopped him. We had the support of all Americans who mattered. How did we fail?.

His diehard supporters will say, if he fails, it was the democrats and the idiot American people who stopped him and his team from improving tneir lives, their security, their prosperity, and their prospects for advancement. In this event, they would be correct. Let's hope and pray the American people aren't that stupid.

While DJT may well be the worst ever, BHO caused destruction beyond measure among working Americans. HRC was the preferred POTUS of the corrupt chump Ukrainian government. DJT did duggest in his campaign that we. Might consider dumping this chump cortupt failure loser government. This alone would be reason to support DJT. If only POTUS can stay true his convictions as a candidate.

Iceland went to war against Britain after Ww2 and won.
It was over fishing rights.

It was not a hot war, obviously.

There was R & D & naval confrontations.

There's a lot of fuzzy boundaries in the commercial fishing world, and as prices keep going up, fisherman will continue to stretch the rules. I can tell you out of personal experience, being the honest guy that follows the rules puts you at an extreme disadvantage...Magnuson-Stevens Act gets violated regularly around my home port.

Mr Smith is right about the book he commends but he ought to tell us what he has learned from that book that might apply to the topic at hand

Mr. Lapides

To spoil the ending the Ice Landers cut the cables of the British trawlers. Creating the cutters took some research.

The British trawlers were escorted by British Warships. The Icelandic coast Guard cutters rushed in between the trawlers and the British warships and cut the line with a towed cutter.

The British warships dared not fire on the Ice landers, because they were NATO and maybe other things.

The book is worth you time even if you read 1/2 to 1/3rd of it.

To expand upon this, if a country cannot provide a coast guard, maybe the UN could. A case in point is that maybe the UN could have provided a coast guard to protect Somali fisheries from foreigners.

There is at least a grain of truth in the Somali complaints about poaching. Although I think they committed piracy because they could.

For a country
