The Guardian: China worried US cyber strategy 'ups the ante on the internet arms race'

* New Pentagon cybersecurity policy singles out China, among others, as threat
* Country also dismisses concerns over parade to mark end of second world war

China’s defence ministry expressed concern on Thursday over the Pentagon’s updated cyber strategy, which stresses the US military’s ability to retaliate with cyber weapons, saying this would only worsen tension over internet security.

The ministry also rebuffed a senior US official who cast doubt on China’s plans to hold a military parade in September to mark the end of the second world war.

The Pentagon’s new cyber strategy presents a potentially far more muscular role for the US military’s cyber warriors than the Pentagon was willing to acknowledge in its last strategy rollouts in 2011, and singles out threats from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

WNU Editor: These Chinese warnings are way-too-late. As the Edward Snowden NSA revelations have revealed .... we have been in a cyber arms race for a very long time.

The US is already years if not a decade or more behind Russia and China in terms of cyber warfare capabilities. Not only this but the Russians and Chinese are continuing to advance in these areas and far more skilled in this area. As such, it seems unlikely the US could ever catch up in a reasonable period of time unless Russia and China suddenly went away which seems unlikely.

Given the vast internal problems and the numerous powerful external enemies the United States has, it is far likely to cease to exist within the next few years than Russia or China are. When faced with enemies who are more powerful than you and are more stable than you, the best approach would be to adjust policy accordingly understanding Russia and China are the world's top powers and will be for the foreseeable future. In fact, try and determine some way we can add value to the leadership of Russia and China.

To use an analogy, the US, Russia, and China are like basketball players in terms of cyber warfare capabilities. At this time, Russia and China have mastered fancy dribble moves and 360 dunks. The United States by comparison has barely learned how to dribble the ball yet in this area!! As such, trying to challenge the masters in this area seems to be foolhardy at best.

The best that can happen is we get laughed off the court, as I'm sure the Russians and Chinese are laughing hysterically at people who are essentially to stupid to understand they are stupid but at some point they are going to get irritated with us to the point they decide to do us serious harm!!
